Understand Your Medicare Coverage Options

 Original Medicare is the federal government’s traditional fee-for-service health insurance program. It includes Part A and Part B and helps cover many medically necessary hospital and medical services.

Part A generally helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Part B generally helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, many preventive services, and other medically necessary care.

Original Medicare is not the same as completely free health insurance. While some people qualify for premium-free Part A, most people pay a monthly premium for Part B, and they may also have deductibles and coinsurance for covered services.

 It is also important to understand what Original Medicare does not cover. Original Medicare does not cover some common services such as routine eye exams, most dental care, and some other benefits people often expect health insurance to include. And Original Medicare generally does not cover medical care outside the U.S. 

 After learning how Original Medicare works, many people compare the other options available to them. The most common options are Medicare Advantage, Part D prescription drug coverage, and Medicare Supplement insurance.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is another way to receive your Part A and Part B benefits through a private company approved by Medicare. Many Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage, and some may offer additional benefits that Original Medicare does not cover.

Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D) helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Part D is optional and is offered by private companies approved by Medicare.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is extra insurance sold by private insurance companies to help pay some of the costs Original Medicare does not cover. Medigap works with Original Medicare and helps fill some of the “gaps” in coverage.
